MODE OF ACTION
Butyric acid is a short chain fatty acid (SCFA) easily absorbed by the jejunum and a primary energy source for intestinal epithelial cells providing 70% energy for the small intestine and increasing absorbability.
It markedly increases the height of intestinal villis and the depth of crypts. Butyric acid is the most important nutrient source for the colon. After being absorbed by the colon, butyric acid is effectively utilised by colon mucosa cells reducing Colitis, Intestinal Stress Syndrome and other intestinal diseases.
The common application of butyric acid is sodium butyrate.
